New Year’s Dance Party with Okie Weiss & the Zydeco Playboys, Deep Thicket Dwellers, and special guest Volena

Join us at this New Years Eve-adjacent event for a night of sweaty revelry and American Roots music.

Pete Okie Weiss (yes, his middle name is Okie) hails from Austin, Texas, where he played keys & accordion with local legends Gumbo Ce SoirThe Gritones, and Leo Rondeau. Now based out of Oakland, Okie has assembled a rhythm section featuring members of soul band Emily Day & the Knights and honky-tonkers The Country Business. The result is OKIE WEISS & THE ZYDECO PLAYBOYS, a new zydeco band that knows how to walk the soul-country line and keep that dance floor packed 'til closing time.

DEEP THICKET DWELLERS is a four-piece band rooted in Anchorage AK and Oakland CA, blending Bluegrass, Old-time, Gypsy Jazz, and John Hartford's spirit, with music orbiting around the fiddle. Their “Hillbilly Jazz” style brings mountain soul and improvisational warmth, reflecting their cross-coastal roots.

The night will feature a special short opening solo set from Brooklyn, NY-based VOLENA, the artist project of current Mendocino Arts Center resident Maddie Grandusky-Howe. Inspired by songwriters including Haley Heynderickx and Connie Converse, Volena's folk-rock songs explore internal and eternal conflicts between emotion and reaction.

Doors at 5pm. Music at 6pm. Sliding scale cover $10-$30.

Beer, wine, soft drinks, and delicious coastal comfort food from the kitchen will be available for purchase.

Hanna Haas // Erisy Watt

Hanna Haas // Erisy Watt

Hanna Haas is a songwriter drawn to the dance of light and dark. Currently based in the Bay Area California, she has come to call the entire West Coast her home. Hanna describes her music as “contemplative folk,” identifying with artists Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, and Feist for their alternate tunings and mesmerizing melodies. Inspired by environments in which she has inhabited, Hanna sings of the dramatic landscape of Big Sur, the California sun, and the vast and open Pacific Northwest sky. Hanna loves to engage her audiences in sweet story-telling and laughter, leaving her audience in a state of heart-felt introspection.

LA-based songwriter Erisy Watt just released her third album, not either or but everything, on October 4th via First City Artists. Described as “what contemporary folk sounds like at its peak” by No Depression, her music often draws comparisons to 60s singer-songwriters, but her new record—co-produced with Luke Temple (Adrianne Lenker, Hand Habits)—shakes loose from the tenets of decade or genre. Originally from Nashville and previously residing in Portland, Erisy now calls LA home but splits her time between there and Southeast Asia, where she works in environmental science—an aspect of her life that appears woven through her songs. Featuring stunning guitar work from Will Graefe (Maya Hawke) and drums by Kosta Galanopoulos, not either or but everything is out everywhere now—available for streaming or on vinyl.

Doors at 5pm. Music at 6pm. Sliding scale cover $10-$30.

Beer, wine, soft drinks, and delicious coastal comfort food from the kitchen will be available for purchase.

Pat Byrne//R.O. Shapiro

An Irish singer-songwriter, Pat Byrne has come a long way since his first deal with Universal. In late 2017, Byrne began his migration to Austin, Texas. In 2019, Pat took the US by storm, with breakout performances at the 30A Festival, SXSW, Kerrville Folk Festival and the Americana Festival. Being immersed in the Texas music scene, Pat's sophomore US release, Into the Light, has an edgier feel underscoring both emotional depth and greater confidence, while blending new influences with his rich Irish heritage.

“When you combine the transcendent poetry of Bob Dylan with the gritty, real-world rock-n-roll storytelling that Bruce Springsteen made so famous, and then add a dash of the political activism embodied by Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, you’ll have Irish singer-songwriter Pat Byrne” — Folk Alley at the 30a Songwriters festival, Florida 2019

R.O. Shapiro is a new familiar fixture in the Mendocino Coast music scene, and at Good Bones in particular. He is a troubadour, a traveler peddling original tunes of love, loss, and social justice, carefully crafted and soulfully sung. A New Yorker, an Austinite, and now a Californian, he’s always on the lookout for new communities and stages where he can share his authentic warmth and wit.

Pat and R.O. are old friends from Austin, but this will mark only their second ever co-bill, coming hot on the tail of their first on November 8th at Hopmonk Tavern in Novato, presented by highly-regarded Bay Area promoter K.C. Turner. It’s a real treat to get Pat up to the coast, we hope you’ll join us for a night of heartfelt songs after the Third Annual Caspar Lantern Walk!

Doors at 5pm (or at conclusion of Lantern Walk). Music at 6pm. Sliding scale cover $10-$30.

Funny Bone Stand-Up Comedy Night
Nov

Funny Bone Stand-Up Comedy Night

Good Bones Kitchen hits your funny bone with our inaugural Funny Bones Comedy Night. Three headline comedians from the Bay Area provide an evening of laughter that will stimulate your perspectives and soothe your soul.

Headliner: Phil Johnson

Phil Johnson has an action-packed show filled with his two loves, comedy and music. It’s a show filled with sharp unexpected turns, sneak attack jokes, and hilarious songs that don’t shy away from controversial territory… race, sex, religion, and doughnuts – so many doughnuts – all delivered from the viewpoint of a guy who happily grew up in the deeply multi-everything community of the San Francisco Bay Area. Phil has been seen and heard at the Sundance Film Festival, and Edinburgh Fringe Festival, on Sirius/XM, Bob and Tom radio, and Amazon Prime. He’s also released multiple comedy specials and albums filled with his colorful, tightly-written comedy.

Host: Ira Summer

Ira Summer has used his pain to make people laugh for over a decade. As an aging Baby Boomer growing up in a large dysfunctional family, he has a lot to share. Ira often talks about his sons, his siblings, and his mother (but never his ex-wife, because she will sense it). Ira has performed at clubs (and casinos and colleges and bars and conference rooms and laundromats and bowling alleys..) in 28 states, and can be heard on Sirius XM. He has been a finalist in the US Comedy Contest and The World Series of Comedy. Ira participated in the Oakland Comedy Festival, the Comedy Fringe Festival, the Portland Comedy Festival, the Burbank Comedy Festival and the Laughlin Laugh Fest.

Opener: Frankie Anne

Frankie Anne is a dynamic comedian and performer who recently opened on national headliner Mike Marino’s “Welcome to the Family” tour and for comedy legend Craig Shoemaker, aka The Lovemaster. She served as Producer/Director for Shoemaker's podcast Still Standing Up w/ Craig Shoemaker and was also a producer for Showtime’s Live Nude Comedy and various other TV and film productions. Frankie Anne has also dazzled audiences in Broadway comedy musical tours of West Side Story as Anita and Smokey Joe’s Café as Brenda. She’s also appeared in numerous TV and film roles and toured as a vocalist with iconic bands like Big Brother and The Holding Co. and on Barbara Streisand’s Timeless tour. With her sharp wit, east coast attitude, and background steeped in music, Frankie’s stand-up comedy is a unique blend of humor and raw storytelling. Her comedy delivers an entertaining and raw take on relationships, hilariously exposing encounters with the men in her life, like a serial predator and other unforgettable characters, making her performances relatable and entertaining.

Deerlady

Deerlady

This show is presented in association with Xa Kako Dile: .

Yes you see that right, this show is the night of the Presidential Election. Go vote, and then come hang with Good Bones and Deerlady for a soothing combo of comfort food and badass music, instead of glueing yourself to your TV (we probably won’t get a final result until days later anyway!)

Deerlady is the indie rock project of Mali Obomsawin and Magdalena Abrego. On the duo’s debut albumGreatest Hits,” we feel tremors and transformations in a perfectly-crafted universe of experimental shoegaze. In eight songs, we witness a precious softness that emerges from seas of rage and heartache – a throughline of hope that seems to flower over a bedrock of anti-colonial collaboration.

The album’s first single saw an early premiere on August 9, 2023 for what TV Guide has named the no. 1 Best TV Episode of 2023. “There There” is prominently featured in Episode 3 of the critically acclaimed third season of Reservation Dogs, and since its release, the song has been streamed nearly 120,000 times across streaming platforms.

Mali Obomsawin is a bassist, singer-songwriter and composer from Odanak First Nation. With a background in folk, rock, and experimental jazz, Obomsawin’s musical voice is singular and unshackled. Her debut album Sweet Tooth (Out of Your Head Records, 2022) garnered international acclaim and was named in ‘best of the year’ lists from GRAMMY.com, The Guardian, and JazzTimes. Prior to her auspicious debut in creative music, Obomsawin spent nearly a decade touring and writing with former folk-rock band Lula Wiles. She also performs regularly with collaborators Jake Blount and Julia Keefe, and mentors Taylor Ho Bynum, Bill Cole, and Peter Apfelbaum.

Magdalena Abrego is a guitarist, composer, and teaching artist based in Hudson, New York. Influenced by free jazz and punk, Magdalena’s approach to her instrument playfully confronts tradition and embraces queer experimentalism. Her compositions have been described as an “unpredictable musical journey” (Boston Hassle), both “blissful and beautifully erratic” (Boston Compass). Magdalena presently serves as a faculty member in the Contemporary Musical Arts program at the New England Conservatory. Her expertise has garnered invitations to deliver guest lectures and provide guidance to ensembles at esteemed music institutions throughout the Northeast, including Berklee College of Music and Dartmouth College.

Splendid Torch // Angie & Gwyneth

Saturday, November 2nd Good Bones Kitchen offers an exceptional treat with two stellar groups; Splendid Torch, a touring bluegrass trio from the Boston area, and local favorites Angie Heimann & Gwyneth Moreland.

Splendid Torch dwells in spontaneity and synthesis, conjuring an unexpectedly broad sound from just three musicians. Comprised of multi-instrumentalists Lily Sexton (lead vocals, fiddle, guitar), Sean Davis (acoustic and electric guitar, vocals), and Josh Ballard (bass, clawhammer banjo), Splendid Torch calls on textured lyricism, collective rhythmic feel, and poignant vocal performances that evoke their varied influences, ranging from George Harrison to Emmylou Harris, The Band to John Hartford.

Guitaress and songwriter Angie Heimann, leader of the Blushin’ Roulettes, belts her stirring songs of damsels in their bliss and distress in a clarion vibrato often likened to Iris Dement. Gwyneth Moreland’s gift for open-hearted storytelling perfectly suits the modern art of folk music. Her remarkable range and supple tones are the result of an exceptional talent and years of experience as a vocalist. Joining this spectacular duo will be Cas Sochacki on bass.

The doors open at 6:00 PM, and the music starts at 7:00 PM.

The Lucky Losers

The Lucky Losers’ music is a throwback to the hybrid of soul, blues, rock, gospel, and country that emerged in the late 1960’s with impassioned vocal performances, electrifying musical interplay, and powerful harmonica.

Described as “the finest female blues vocalist in the U.S” [Real Blues - 2010], fiery Dallas-born entertainer Cathy Lemons has a velvet voice with a gritty edge and the rebel conviction of a woman risen from the ashes. New Jersey native Phil Berkowitz "has earned renown as one of the West Coast’s most distinctive harp players, as well as for his sharp, resonant tenor" [Living Blues - 2018]. The stark contrast between incandescent Lemons and elegant Berkowitz makes for a captivating musical union, breathing new life into American songwriting tradition and the vanishing art of duet singing.

Jean Rohe // Sadie Gustafson-Zook

Jean Rohe // Sadie Gustafson-Zook

Join us for a night with two brilliant touring singer-songwriters!

Jean Rohe (ROW) writes one-of-a-kind narrative songs, concerned as much with the interior lives of her narrators as with the sociopolitical forces that shape them. She is perhaps best known for “National Anthem: Arise! Arise!” an aspirational alternative national anthem which spread via word-of-mouth and has now been performed hundreds of times by artists and choirs across the US. Her personal and timely song “Animal” won the Kerrville New Folk songwriting contest in 2022, and her long list of awards is a testament to the breadth of her vision, spanning prizes in roots music, song craft, lyric writing, theater arts, social-justice work, jazz performance, and arts education.

Equally at home as a solo performer or collaborator, her recent projects include a record with her duo, Robinson & Rohe (“Into the Night,” Righteous Babe, 2023) and a forthcoming album with the Brooklyn-based collaborative quartet Eureka Shoes (“Beautalina,” Adhyâropa, 2024). Her work-in-progress performance memoir, "74 Corridor,” is supported by the Brooklyn Arts Council. She lives in Brooklyn.

"Not only does she make astoundingly beautiful music but she is thoughtful, reflective, and courageous." - No Depression

With a pure and agile voice reminiscent of Joni Mitchell, Midwest-based artist Sadie Gustafson-Zook’s hummable melodies balance with witty lyrics and intricate guitar playing to create charmingly honest and relatable music. A skilled performer, Sadie’s writing tackles internal and taboo subjects while holding the audience with warmth and levity. Sadie’s songs have been endorsed by some of the most respected songwriting contests in the country, winning the Acorn Theatre's 2024 Singer Songwriter Competition, Kerrville Folk Festival’s 2022 New Folk Contest (as well as placing as a finalist in 2020), earning second place at the Rocky Mountain Folk Fest’s Songwriter Showcase, and winning first place at the 2022 NewSong + LEAF Songwriting Contest. On Sadie’s most recent album “Where I Wanna Be” (2024), Sadie takes the listener along on an intimate analog-recorded journey as she decides where to call home.

“She uses her voice with the precision of an instrument, leaping between registers and outlining jazz chords, all with grace and ease, never in a gratuitous, showy manner.” - No Depression

They call our music “industrial ragtime,” approaching the music of the last century through their own high-energy lens. Everything they do is firmly under the flag of great entertainment -- lead by their engaging lead singer Melina Selverston. The fun and excitement of this music is infectious.

Frankie and The Lost Souls

Frankie and the Lost Souls is an indie folk-rock band founded by wife and husband duo Erica and Sebastian in 2009 as Frankie and the Bass, a basement suite hobby that grew organically from their mutual lifelong love of music and live performance. The band has evolved from performing classic campfire covers at open mics and busking on street corners to a creative tour-de-force bringing to life Erica’s folk and country-inspired originals.

The addition of Lynkse on lead guitar has elevated the group’s sound with melodic riffs that hint at a nostalgia for a 90s and early 00s pop-rock soundscape that enrich narrative-driven lyrics exploring heartbreak and love, mental health, conflict, and the overall unresolved nature of the human condition.

Winona (Full Band) // Gillian Grogan

Winona is a musician, songwriter, and performer based in Northern California. Her songs are mythic, her vocals haunting, full of melancholic longing and timeless beauty. Rooted in folk music of the 1960s and inspired by modern indie songstresses, Winona’s sound is at once nostalgic and dew-fresh unique. Her influences include Feist, Kate Wolf, Courtney Marie Andrews, and (of course) Joni.

Now backed by an immensely talented band, Winona’s songs are free to become entirely alive, with shimmering chord progressions, siren-like harmonies, and melodies that will spirit you away to the stars.

Gillian Grogan opens the night. Untamed and untethered, Grogan drifts between genres with her tickled strings and floating vocals, her hammered riffs and belted requests. We All Need Someone To Shout For calls it "powerhouse emotive folk storytelling in the vein of Laura Marling". It is the alchemy of a pure yet earthy voice that can silence a room. The Woven Collective calls it "an unforgiving tuggin' at your roots, no matter where you come from, her lyrics wash over you like gentle reminders of another life you haven't had yet."

Colby Lee is a self-taught singer, songwriter, and musician highly versed on a wide variety of instruments. His compositions are packed with melodies that seem to have been basking in the sun somewhere on a salty beach. His voice is mellow and soulful, yet rich with warmth. His lyrics, full of dreamy sunset-colored imagery. His music a mix of folk, reggae and soul, that is well blended and refreshing to experience.

Colby has extended his talents to include Rob Marcello on bass (Mama Grows Funk/Moon Rabbit), and Tim Cuny on drums (Moon Rabbit/Deep Pockets) in a new musical adventure named “Ocean”. As the Ocean has many depths, tides, temperatures, currents, and locations, the band Ocean navigates through many musical elements of jazz, Latin, funk, reggae, rock, and of course surf to deliver a fusion of melodic and rhythmic eddys that gets heads bobbing and feet dancing. Ocean is ever changing, adapting, and delivering songs that are calming and still, rough and raw, and in the end, always fulfilling.

Sharon Silva // Cooper Kenward

Sharon Silva, known for her passionate presence in The Wild Reeds, is setting out on her first solo voyage. Silva sings with a direct pensiveness, nuance, and depth that can only come from real-lived experience. Her songs tap into a rich interior world, where feelings of loss, accomplishment, and love all coincide. In this world, these complicated feelings are met with curiosity and wonder. She has recently supported americana mainstay acts David Ramirez and The Lone Bellow, and is headed for a west coast tour this August with Cooper Kenward. Silva recently finished her debut album, due out this fall.

Cooper Kenward writes warm feel-good-even-if-you-feel-bad songs. Hailing from a small town in Northern California, he explores the odd backroads of the heart. He has a mix of songs that could be blasted from a barn, giggled from a ferris wheel, or hummed in a rainstorm. By day, Kenward makes films. Some say that’s why his ballads smack of vivid details. He honed his skills playing in the infamous garage band Nature’s Vegas in San Francisco, and now resides in LA with his pitbull Bonnie Raitt.

Doors at 4pm. Music at 5pm. $20.

Beer, wine, soft drinks, and delicious food from the kitchen will be available for purchase.
